What is Freezer Paper?
Freezer paper is a thick paper with a coating on one side that shields your favorite foods from losing moisture. The coating also helps keep air out, helping to prevent freezer burn . This makes freezer paper ideal for storing meats, leftovers, and other foods to protect them from harsh freezer temperatures.
When to use freezer paper
While freezer paper is commonly used for freezing and storing foods, it has many other uses beyond just the freezer! So, what is freezer paper good for?
- Freezing meat and cheese for long-term storage
- Wrapping leftovers
- Protecting surfaces
- Crafting and quilting
Because it is specially designed for the frigid temperatures of the freezer, it should never be used in appliances that generate high heat or open flames. The coating can melt, and the paper can catch fire. Do not use freezer paper in:
- Ovens
- Toaster ovens
- Convection ovens
- Microwave ovens
- Air fryers
- Grills or near open flames
Freezer paper vs. butcher paper
You might think that freezer paper is similar to butcher paper and can be used interchangeably. However, there are some distinct differences. When should you use freezer paper instead of butcher paper?
Freezer paper: The shiny, non-stick coating helps keeps air out and moisture in to prevent freezer burn. This makes it perfect for long-term freezer storage of raw meats, cheese, or leftovers. Take a deeper dive into how to avoid freezer burn when storing meats .
Butcher paper: Butcher paper is specifically designed for short term cold storage and for low heat cooking on a smoker. It allows hot air to flow in while it traps moisture inside when several layers are wrapped around your meat.
Freezer and butcher paper are not just your everyday culinary helpers. Both can be used for creative DIY craft projects and protective coverings! Later, we’ll touch on fun and handy ways to use freezer paper. And don’t miss out on ways to use butcher paper for smoking meats and other clever household projects.
Freezer paper vs parchment paper
Each type of paper plays a special role in the kitchen, so let’s discover when it’s best to use freezer paper vs parchment paper.
Freezer paper: It’s clear that freezer paper is meant for freezing. However, its non-stick coating makes it unsafe for higher heat applications, such as microwaves or ovens. Freezer paper is your go-to paper for wrapping meats, hard cheeses, and leftovers for long-term storage.
Parchment paper: It features a non-stick silicone coating, making it heat-resistant and non-stick. It’s suitable for use in the oven up to 425°F and for the microwave, though always avoid direct exposure to heating elements. Parchment paper isn’t intended for wrapping foods in the freezer by itself. However, it’s ideal for separating layers between baked goods or burger patties for longer-term freezer storage.
Freezer paper vs wax paper
Let’s explore when to use freezer paper versus wax paper.
Freezer paper: This paper still beats wax paper for the freezer because it provides a better barrier against air and moisture loss, helping to prevent freezer burn. It is also more durable and tear-resistant than wax paper, whether wet or dry.
Wax paper: While this paper’s food-safe wax seals out air, it’s better for short-term storage in the refrigerator. It can also be used to separate layers of baked goods or burger patties for short-term freezing, especially if you plan to thaw them before separating. Learn more tips about when to use wax paper.

How to Use Freezer Paper for Storing Food

Step 1: Center your food on a large sheet of freezer paper (shiny side facing the food)
Step 2: Bring the two sides together at the top and fold the ends over about ½ to 1 inch
Step 3: Keep folding and creasing until the paper is snug against the food. Then, flip the packet over (fold side down)
Step 4: Press outwards from the center of the package to remove air as you tuck the paper into the side of the food and crimp the paper edges. Fold ends into triangles, then fold the open edges until flush with the food. Seal folded edges with freezer tape, then date, label, and freeze1

Frequently Asked Questions About Using Freezer Paper
Which side of the freezer paper do you use? Shiny side in or out?
Shiny side in is the way to go! The non-stick side keeps unwanted air out and moisture in, helping to prevent freezer burn. The dull paper side should face outward to easily label and date the wrapped foods.
Can freezer paper go in the oven?
No. Freezer paper should never be used in heat applications like the oven, microwave, air fryer, or grill. The coating could melt, and the paper could catch fire.
Can you use freezer paper instead of parchment paper?
While freezer paper is fantastic for wrapping foods before storing them in your fridge or freezer, it should never be used in your oven or microwave! Parchment paper should be used for higher heat applications (though avoid direct exposure to heating elements). The coating that makes freezer paper ideal for longer-term freezer or refrigerator storage can melt when heated and cause fires (hello, kitchen disaster!).
Can you microwave freezer paper?
No, the freezer paper’s coating could melt and cause fires.
